How viable are solar panels in space?
I've been thinking that if we create a large chain or group of solar panels we could obtain massive amounts of power generation for our country. So I'm just wondering how well solar panels work in space; are they better than they are on earth or worse? (A life span of how long the could last in space before loosing their functionality would be great too.)
They work very well. The total radiant energy (from the Sun) is around 1200 Watts per square meter and most satellites have some sort of solar panels to generate the electrical power that they need. And their theoretical lifetime is on the order of hundreds of years.
The problem is getting all of that power back down to Earth.
