the average household uses 7400kWh
a) Installation of solar panel systems represents one way households can reduce the demand for
electricity on state electricity resources. A 1kW system of solar panels can produce a maximum of
3.9kWh of electricity per day. How many 1kW solar panel systems would need to be purchased to
meet the average power consumption of a NSW house?
b) At $6000 fully installed for a 1kW solar panel system after rebates, how much would the average
household pay for solar panels that meet their average electricity needs?
c) Assuming electricity bought from the grid costs 18cents per kWh and prices do not rise in the
future, how long will it take for the household to start saving money?
Asuming the 7400kWh is per year:
a) 1 solar panel produces 3.9*365 kWh a year = 1423.5kWh
To work out number of panels needed 7400/1423.5 = 5.198 round up to 6 (normally you would round down but 5 panels would not produce the engergy needed).
b) $6000*6 = $36000
c) Work out total cost of electricity per year from grid: $0.18*7400 = $1332
Number of years = 36000/1332 = 27.02
Getting Started with Solar Power

- Third, consider the cost. Remember, cost, quality and time do not always play nicely together. You can usually have 2 of these factors, but not all three. If you learn what is required and do the work yourself, you will SAVE A LOT OF MONEY. The other option can be shelling out some extra money and get a person who has knowledge in solar power installation to have the work done in short order. For those who wish to hire a professional contractor, start with a web search within your locality and do not forget to check the credentials on that particular contractor. You can also find rebates offered by the federal government and maybe even your local city.
