The modern solar panel finds its roots in the first solar collector which was built in 1776 by Horace de Saussare. His collector was cone shaped and would boil ammonia that would then perform like refrigeration and locomotion. This invention went on to inspire the first solar power steam engine in 1861, though short-lived and soon abandoned, the potential of solar power was becoming more and more recognised.
As we move along the timeline to the 19th century we can see further developments. The 1880s saw the creation of the very first photovoltaic cells. This was a revolutionary discovery and it paved the way for the creation of the first commercial solar water heater. This was invented by a man called Clarence Kemp. Albert Einstein would later win a Nobel Prize for his work on photo-electricity.
Eventually, in the 1950s, solar power saw its first mainstream usage with the first solar water heated office building being built during this time by an architect named Frank Bridgers. Interestingly, the subsequent fall in oil prices during the 1960s saw to the decline in solar power usage and it was not until the oil embargo of the 1970s that solar power garnered strength once more as an energy resource.
Again, with the advent of the Gulf War in the 1990s, solar power was further recognised as an alternative to oil and petroleum products and over one million US homes had some form of solar power installed.
In today's world, solar power is used in two major ways: photovoltaic conversion format and thermal solar power. Thermal solar power is where the sun is used to heat fluids, which then powers turbines or other types of machinery. Photovoltaic conversion format is the basis on which solar panels operate. These panels are used to create electricity directly from the sun and can be used alone or in conjunction with other power resources.
